Matakana Coast - wine country
Tuesday, 21 October 2008
Matakana Coast Wine Country is a place where the “good things in life” are found in abundance. Visit the bohemian village of Puhoi and then travel on to witness the colonial buildings of the early Europeans at Warkworth where you can stroll along the river bank. Once the saddleries and corseteries of yesteryear, these now house a wide array of galleries, shops and cafes. A ferry ride to Kawau Island and Mansion House affords a rare glimpse of days gone by. Out of the coast, descendants of the Ngati Wai and Ngati Whatau tribes remain where their ancestors made their homes centuries ago. A visit to Matakana Coast Wine Country is a gastronomic treat. The region abounds with a startling array of fresh produce, often available from roadside stalls. From limes, avocadoes, herbs and persimmons to chestnuts, olives, venison and oysters, the area’s chefs are spoilt for choice. You can choose anything from a romantic candlelit dinner for two, to a country-pub meal with friends in front of a crackling fire. Once the “fruit bowl of Auckland” the Matakana Coast is now home to a flourishing wine industry. These are innovative, quality-focussed wineries, small and family owned. Each provides the visitor with an intimate opportunity to share the passion and products of the winemaker. A visit to Matakana Coast Wine Country is a treat for the soul.
