Water, water everywhere so why are my crops so dry? Although we may be having a wetter than usual summer, water conservation always makes good... cents!

An essential part of farm (or household) management, water conservation is not only good for our environment but can save money.

While we all want to ensure our stock receive the water they need, overflowing troughs waste a significant amount of water.

In addition, approximately a quarter of farm power costs are directly related to the pumping of this vital substance. With so much water being moved around the farm (as well as inside the home) leaks from water pipes can easily occur.

Every day you could be losing anywhere from 14,000 to more than 30,000 litres through a leak the size of a nail head; that equates to between $300 and in excess of $700 per month!

But all is not lost; through vigilance farmers can ensure the well won’t run dry of our most precious resource.

- Check for, and repair, leaks regularly around the home and farm
- Carefully monitor water usage and expense
- Ensure pumps are well maintained
- Inspect troughs
- Check taps are correctly turned off
- Utilise rainwater wherever possible
