Organic milk: A better choice

Organically farmed animals are reared in humane conditions without the use of antibiotics and growth promoters, and are raised on an organic diet. As is known, organic food, in general, contains no chemicals, artificial additives or pesticides; so do products from organically grown animals. According to USDA’s standards, milk and milk products can be labelled ‘organic’ if the milk is from cows that have been exclusively fed organic feed, are kept in pens with adequate space, are allowed periodic access to the outdoors and direct sunlight, are not treated with synthetic hormones and are not given certain medications to treat illness. So, it is the way and the process how those animals are reared for their milk that makes the milk organic. Organic milk is the one of the most thoroughly researched organic food products, and though opinions may vary in the industry, research indicates that such milk is nutritionally superior and better for human health. A recent study from Newcastle University showed that organic milk contains more nutritionally desirable fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants, including up to a staggering 60% more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) during the summer months. There is experimental evidence suggesting that CLA might have anti-carcinogenic, anti-atherosclerotic, anti-diabetic and immune-modulating effects, as well as a favourable influence on body fat composition, i.e. on the proportion of fat tissue to muscle mass. The study also found that organically farmed cows produced milk that was on average 50% higher in vitamin E, 75% higher in beta carotene, and two to three times higher in lutein and zeaxanthine (which are powerful antioxidants). It suggested that organic milk contains at least 68% more omega-3 than conventional milk. Omega 3 fatty acids (which cannot be made by the body and must be obtained from food) play an important role in maintaining heart health, combating the effects of arthritis and optimal brain function. Additionally organic milk had a lower omega-6:omega-3 fatty acid ratio, which is also considered to be desirable in reducing the risk of many chronic diseases. In some countries, organic milk is being considered the best choice for everyone, including kids, for a number of reasons. Since such milk is produced without the help of hormones and antibiotics, it is much healthier. The use of organic feed to animals means a reduced exposure to chemical pesticides and the related harmful effects. Unlike factory cows, organic cows have access to open air and are allowed to graze freely in organic pastures. Such farming is supportive of wildlife, respectful of environment, and kind to animals. So, while organic milk provides all the benefits offered by non-organic milk, it is a healthier alternative with little risk of exposure to harmful pesticides, fertilisers, hormones and antibiotics.
