Perhaps one of the most commonly used power tools found on farms of all sizes is the chainsaw.

It can be used for a multitude of jobs and as such should be kept serviced and at the ready. It should also be stored safely and out of the reach of children.

When using a chainsaw always be aware of its reactive forces. Anyone accustomed to using one will know that when cutting with the bottom of the bar, the chain can pull the user into the work they are doing. On the other hand, cutting with the top of the bar can result in a push you away from that work.

Of course, the way in which the bar is being used will determine grip and stance but even the most skilled operator should be aware that kickback can result in a nasty accident.

Kickback occurs when a chain on the saw is forced to stop, for any one of a number of reasons. The action then throws the saw back towards the operator.

Prevent kickback by ensuring the tip of the bar remains in solid wood. If cutting a log from below, do it in two stages: First cut from above, then make another cut from below to meet the first.

Start every cut under full throttle and hold the chainsaw with both hands. Grip firmly, keep the elbow locked and the saw close to the body but don’t cut above shoulder height. A saw with chain brake is a good safety measure.

For farmers using the good weather to tackle yard jobs, keep properties tidy and to concentrate on the building jobs before winter, the STIHL MS 181 ErgoStart chainsaw is the perfect tool to have at hand.

With 1.5kW of power, the MS 181 ErgoStart chainsaw has ideal balance of size and strength to complete backyard chores with ease including thinning small trees, trimming, pruning, cutting firewood or building a tree hut for the kids.

The MS 181 ErgoStart model is lightweight and designed for effortless start up, and comes with tool-free chain tensioning for quick and safe chain adjustment.

A long-life air filter system that extends maintenance intervals several times over makes this an ideal, low maintenance tool. Furthermore, a low vibration level that allows for smooth cutting and effortless working, without tiring, means it is comfortable, safe and easy to use.
