Good insulation saves you money

It’s spring, so why is it so COLD in this house? Many homes built prior to 1992 do not have existing insulation in their walls. To create a healthy, comfortable and energy efficient home, you need to take a ‘whole house’ approach to comfort and energy saving, ensuring that any money is wisely spent. This is achieved by viewing your home as an energy system with inter-dependant parts. The most important ingredient to the ‘whole house’ approach is to ensure the house is first insulated, i.e completing the thermal envelope so that any heating or cooling system can operate efficiently. In other words, there is not much point having your heaters or air conditioning thermostats set in an un-insulated home. You cannot maintain the temperature as you continue to lose heat through un-insulated areas of the walls. Your systems are working overtime and costing you money. In summer it is the reverse, with the invasive summer heat causing your air-conditioning to work overtime. A common misunderstanding of how insulation works is the perception that if you just insulate the ceiling of an un-insulated house, you will save 35-40% of your heat. This is simply not possible as any heat that would have gone out the ceiling will be redirected to the nearest exit which is, of course, your walls. In cases like this, you need to look at something like Airfoam – a product designed specifically for insulating existing wall cavities and suitable for all existing homes including weatherboard, fibrolite, plasterboard, stucco and more. Airfoam is an extremely safe product to introduce into your walls. It is a modified plastic foam that is fully expanded prior to entering the walls, hence filling your wall cavity safely. It is non-toxic, does not create a fire hazard and is hydrophobic (repels water). Installation can take place year round, from either the outside through existing cladding, or inside through plasterboard (or similar) and will usually be completed within one or two days with very little disruption to the household.
