Down, across & up
By Genevieve and Kerrin Revell
Published by Random House
$39.99 – proceeds to CanTeen

Given the accomplishment of the writers in circumnavigating the majority of New Zealand on or by horse, this is a slightly disappointing read. It is written in diary form by both Genna and Kerrin, and comes across as rather disjointed, possibly as a result.

It often feels as if large tracts have been left out: for example towards the end of the book they are travelling up Wairau Road on the North Shore, and in the next paragraph they are making their way to Dargaville. Yet the photograph – of which there are many very beautiful ones – clearly shows the adventurers in Woodhill Forest, just outside Auckland.

I lost count of the number of horses the couple went through. Almost every equine problem that could be thrown at them was. To add to their challenges, Kerrin had to undergo an operation mid-trek.

Typically resourceful, they acquired a sulky. The majority of the final leg was completed on this conveyance, with perhaps the most reliable horse ‘Doof’, they had all trip. Even he broke down at the final hurdle on Ninety mile beach, necessitating a trip back to Auckland to collect two of the original mounts.

This was an epic journey, but not an epic read, and I suspect the TV documentary made simultaneously will reveal far more. Quite apart from the $33,000 the expedition raised for CanTeen, perhaps the real achievement is that the couple are preparing another adventure – on camels across Australia.
