Pepetuna By: Denis Whitmore Publisher: Picture Puffin RRP: $29.95 Three threads woven together create the beautifully multi-layered story of Pepetuna – a Puriri tree moth. Initially we get a glimpse of the five-year life-cycle of Pepetuna. Then with beautiful full colour illustrations, we meet the native animals who come and go from the forest as Pepetuna sleeps. Told by way of delicate pencil sketches embedded among the full colour illustration we are also introduced to a young boy and his family and watch how the child develops over the same five year life-cycle as Pepetuna. Denise Whitmore has enhanced her already beautiful painting by adding textured layers using the likes of lace, paper thread, fabric, buttons and beads, resulting in something really quite unique. Dewey By: Vicky Myron Publisher: Hachette Livre RRP: $39.99 One cold January night a tiny ginger kitten was forced through a returns book slot at a small public library in Iowa. He was found the next morning, bruised, cold and weak but responded quickly to the attention of the Library Supervisor Vicky Myron. A single Mum of one, Vicky found the scruffy kitten to be a calming, soothing influence and noticed he instinctively sought out people in need at the library. If someone was sad or sick, Dewey would find them, climb onto their laps and do his best to cheer them up. Officially christened “Dewey Readmore Books”, he took on the role of supervisor and international ambassador for the library until his death in 2006. When Dewey passed away, over 300 different news sources from around the world carried his obituary and the library was flooded with notes of sympathy. A warm, witty, moving story of how one little cat could bring so much joy to so many.
