Don Merton - the man who saved the Black Robin
Wednesday, 24 October 2007
Written by Alison Balance and with photographs by Don Merton, this is a beautiful book tracing a fifty year career dedicated to saving endangered birds around the world. Don’s work was pivotal in securing the future of both North and South Island saddlebacks. He led the rescue efforts to save the Black Robin when a single breeding pair remained. For more than 30 years Don was at the forefront of the kakapo recovery programme, coordinating and leading last ditch conservation efforts in Fiordland and was instrumental in the successful translocation of all known birds to offshore islands where their future has been secured.
