There are many reasons to join Federated Farmers, which represents about 16,000 farm businesses and rural families.

The Federation’s most important role is the policy work carried out by its professional bunch of about 20 policy analysts.

About a third of this team deals solely with national policy, and a great example of its work is the public access issue.

A couple of years ago the government said it would pass a law that would allow anyone, no matter their character or intent, to walk on private land along waterways. This might sound relatively harmless but the truth is that farmers saw this as a land grab and a further erosion of a farmer’s right to farm. Farmers are mostly happy to allow people to walk over their land – as long as they ask first and obey the rules put in place for their own safety.

Once again, Federated Farmers slipped into campaign mode. The upshot was that the government backed down – a solution which won universal praise and will lead to better access solutions.

Federated Farmers also works at a provincial level. The local policy team is currently involved in over 300 issues affecting farmers and landowners in individual provinces.

The team’s effort is focused on removing the regulatory burden on farming.  Every day the team takes actions that enable normal farming activities to continue without unnecessary restrictions and costs. We help keep rates down, maintain rural representation on local authorities, and promote the importance of your farming business.

With every new member, the federation grows stronger in its ability to deliver on its mission statement which is ‘To add value to the business of farming to our members’.  The key word in this sentence is members, the federation works for its members, and without them it would not exist.
