Franklin's greatest show
Wednesday, 25 January 2012
Every town loves a community event that celebrates the district and every year the Franklin A&P Show is eagerly awaited by the residents of Pukekohe and surrounds. One of the oldest and biggest agricultural and pastoral shows in the country, its focus on farming is at the heart of the region and provides a common ground for large and small blockholders. Everyone from career farmers to lifestylers and townies loves the show which runs a full competition programme for beef, dairy, sheep, goats, fleece, horses and alpacas. There’s also a thriving home industry section plus popular wood-chopping and shearing events. While valuing the tradition of its 126-year history, this is a show that is up with the times and attracts more than 10,000 visitors annually. Last year it was awarded “royal” status which meant exhibitors who were awarded prizes in the beef cattle, sheep and equestrian sections received prestige and recognition within the industry. The 2012 Franklin A&P Show will be open to the public, 9am-5pm on Saturday & Sunday, February 18 & 19 with favourite events including the Counties Strongest Man competition, sheepdog trials, equestrian events and loads of family entertainment including Hamilton retro band Enigma. Naturally there will be a wide array of trade sites and exhibitions showcasing products and services that complement the area’s urban/rural mix. Show visitors can also expect a comprehensive food hall with cooking demonstrations. A great day out for friends, family and farmers, mark the date on your calendar now.
